There are over 85,000 registered charities in Canada.
All registered charities are nonprofit organizations (NPOs) but not all NPOs are registered charities.
According to Statistics Canada, tax receipted donations totalled $8.3 billion in 2010, up 6.5% from 2009 following two years of 5% decreases.
90% of registered charities are “charitable organizations.” The remainder are public or private foundations. Public foundations include hospitals, colleges, universities and community foundations.
Roughly 40% of charities are religious but that number is declining.
80% of registered charities are located in just four provinces – Ontario, 36%; Quebec, 19%; BC, 14%; and Alberta, 11%.
